Why do the french -and Belgium - (OK, we, I am french!!) have the chance of having those beautifull hard cover albums. Do other countries also have some hard covered albums? From what I know mangas are soft covered as the american comics?
I haved lived in England and in Germany and they are really rare. In Germany the translation are mainly in soft cover album's. Am I right in thinking that "the German stories Integral" is the first Yoko hard cover album in german? By the way at around 30€, it is twice as expensive as the french version. Lucky us!

Here, in Quebec, the European comic books have hard cover, while manga and American comics have soft covers. I think it's part of the "type". So I'M really suprised to see that the translations of European comic books have soft covers.

In the 60s and 70's the hard cover albums were thought too expensive and the comming out was similar to books: a good edition in hard cover and one less expensive in a soft cover. That lasted into the 80's. Now soft covers only exist in france and belgium for marketings coups.
So if I count correctly I have bought some of the stories 4 times: first in the comic paper Spirou (2 pages per week), then once as soft cover, then a hard cover edition (when I got a raise in pocket money), and now in the intégrals...

The subject of this topic is "Different countries, different comics?", and not only "different covers?".
So I think I would not be out of the subject by mentionning that, according to what I see, different countries have a different sense of humor also.
For instance, I think that this type is typically American (USA), and would not find any equivalent in Europe, nor in Japan. This slice, and some others in the typical American style, can be found on Cartoons, Comis and Toons.
Some comics lasted for decades and are still published. Such is the case of Nancy, Blondy, Dick Tracy, BC... and those.
I would see absolutely none of those nor any equivalent coming from Europe. Not even from England which is also an English-speaking country (by definition...)
Many decades-old comics, such as Blondie despict mostly scenes from the daily life of suburban families or office workers. One could hardly call these "adventures". And then, of course, there is the other extreme of the superheroes that no mortal could dream of equaling...
If we go to Japan, we see once again "comics" that are very different from the French, German and other European traditions. The site Valdania (written in French but offering English-speaking videos)offers magical, fairy-like videos. Some other Mangas present a very wide variety of styles (from warriors to lovers, from fun games to sad romances, from children-dedicated adventures ans figures to adult sex scenes etc.) but all have in common those thin faces with giant eyes, childish expressions with mature bodies.
So, as we can say "Different countries, different covers", I think we can say "Different countries, different adventures, different heroes, different mentalities"...
