Yoko Tsuno English translation

je me sentait très mal!!!

Oh il y a un petit malentendu!! Je n'ai pas l'intention d'embéter Jérôme avec ses traductions.. je répondais à sa boutade (avec les tomates) par une autre boutade! Loin de moi l'idée de critiquer son travail ou même de lui faire des réflexions du style "tiens moi j'aurai mis ça" puisque je n'ai ni la qualification, ni le culot pour faire ça!!
La seule chose que je pourrais dire, c'est si la traduction m'a autant enchanté que la version originale (et encore..). Mais, je te rassure de suite Emilia (et par la même occasion Jérôme), je n'ai pas l'intention de m'immiscer dans la vie d'un traducteur
Pour avoir passé un an à faire de la traduction, y'a deux choses que j'ai compris : le mot à mot est à bannir et une traduction est toujours un minimum personnel (le choix de dire tel mot plutôt qu'un autre etc). Donc je rectifie le petit malentendu : si j'arrive à trouver les tomes anglais, j'irais pas commenter bulle par bulle la traduction (si je fais ça, bannissez moi surtout)! La traduction étant un art assez complexe, il est hors de question que j'aille critiquer quoi que ce soit!

Mais Pearl je n'ai pas écrit quoi que ce soit pour faire une remarque... Nous sommes heureux du choix du traducteur par Cinebook qui nous a avertis bien avant qu'on ne le lise ici que c'était un grand lecteur de Yoko...
On a juste précisé sa position et la nôtre... Je suis souvent comprise comme si j'avais envie de faire la leçon... Je devrais ne plus intervenir parfois ... Sagesse écossaise...

But you know if i've found out the Yoko Tsuno comics, it's because of my french husband. He advise me what to read. In the past i was just watching the pictures.

I'm still wondering why the European peoples are so crazy about comics. But i begin to understand

I really falled in love with the #20 album. But now i'll continue to try to progress with my french and to know much better the Yoko Tsuno world.

I just started to read and translate the first album of the collection.
The first encounter with the aliens. I love the little girl Pokhy.
and Khany is a very beautifull woman. The blue fit her well !

I'll let you know my impressions about it.

Sage réflexion Emilia ; mais ne pense pas qu'elle doive s'imposer à toi : les mots dépassent parfois la pensée, mais cela n'a aucune importance lorsque l'on a confiance en les gens qui les prononcent

Oh dear, I didn't expect to trigger such a storm of answers - and I was expecting to get notification that they would come. Mmmh. Strange.

Anyways. Don't worry, everyone. I'm well aware that translation is a tough, deeply personal job that can never be 100% perfect for everyone, no matter how good the translator is. Which is precisely why I offered the chance to comment on my work: not that it could change it (since by the time you read it it'll be too late), but so I can see other view points and hear from other styles. For reference, for fun, and because you never, ever stop learning!
I'm fairly thick-skinned. Don't hesitate to really criticise, there's no better learning tool for a writer or a translator.

I should also mention that while I am the primary translator and do the bulk of the job, what I produce is then reviewed by two others - one English-speaking, one French-speaking - and then sent back to me with corrections, questions and suggestions. So it's also a team effort, AND a quality insurance!

To answer a question: I am French, born in the Berry, although both my parents are from Bordeaux. I merely live in Ireland - have done so for the last 8 years, as it happens. Beautiful country - but if you want to visit the "postcard" Ireland, hurry up, it's changing fast. Just a warning.

A final word: Yoko was, when I was a child, my favourite comic. It still, now at 35, is one of my favourites. Translating it is not just a job, it's an absolute pleasure, and fantastic fun. It's a dream come true - a chance for someone with NO artistic talent to work in BD!
And I get to have my name on the albums... How COOL is that, uh?

Hi there, another new English speaking member here
I live in the UK now but grew up in the Flemish part of Belgium where I first discovered Yoko back in the 1970's as a child. I still have some of these early Dutch Yoko books but they are sadly very fragile now

I thought you all might like to see the covers of the two early translated Yoko books as they are different to the usual ones but don't know how to upload the scans. Can anyone help?

By the way Luinsar, can you explain why it has been decided to translate starting at Album 7, not Album 1? My son has been introduced to Yoko by me and would love to see the others in English.

Ah, I'm afraid you'd have to ask Cinebook - they just hired me to translate, the publishing decisions come from them.
Come to think of it, I kinda wonder myself, I suppose I could ask. :p

You must first host your image so it has an URL (an Internet address). To do so, you can log in to a hosting site such as Image Shack. It is free. Then just follow the instructions to upload you image(s) there. Then, when your image is loaded, the site will give you the URL of your image. On Image Shack, there are 6 clickable buttons to the right of each of your images. If you place your cursor (with the mouse) on the second one, a little yellow rectangle says "Image details". Click on this one. This opens a new window with your image in in. Below your image are different addresses. The one you want is the "Direct". It would be something like this

Copy this address in the paperclip of your computer (Edition, copy).

Then come back to the post you are writing. On top of the writing window, there are various commands like [Gauche], [Centrer] etc. On the right, there is [Image] : click on it. This will insert [ img][ /img] (without the spaces) in your text. Now, between the two commands, paste the address of the image. It will look like this :

[ img] [ /img]

without the spaces. This will appear in the previsualisation and in your post like this
