While the main effort of the Laboratory goes into completing
the construction of the LHC, teams of scientists use the
secondary beams provided by the other accelerators to perform
their experiments in a variety of scientific research. At the same
time, in the Theory Unit, physicists continue to imagine what
the LHC will bring us and what will come next.
The tiny details that make a big difference
Take a particle, replace it with its antiparticle, look in a mirror,
and reverse the direction in time. According to current theories
(i.e. the Standard Model), this recipe, applied to any particle
interaction, should produce a result indistinguishable from the
original. The trouble is that some particles already show a tiny
difference when we simply take the antiparticles and look in the
mirror. This effect is called CP violation.
Such tiny differences between matter and antimatter are
predicted by the Standard Model, but not explained. They could
be a key element to understanding the Universe’s imbalance
between matter (all we observe) and antimatter (only produced
artificially in laboratories or produced by cosmic rays in their
interaction with the atmosphere).
The NA48/2 experiment at CERN studies the behaviour of
‘kaons’, a family of particles whose neutral members showed
the first signs of a CP violation effect back in 1964. In 2007,
NA48/2 made precise measurements of one way that K+ and
K- particles decay. The Standard Model predicts their decay
rates to be equal; a difference, however small, would imply
new physics. The results confirmed the validity of the Standard
Model with improved precision.
Nuclear physics gets a boost
Nuclear physics has, during recent decades, become increasingly
concentrated around large national and international
laboratories. CERN has played a special role in this process by
hosting the ISOLDE facility for close to 40 years. Experiments
use the wide variety of radioactive beams provided by the
ISOLDE complex to study the structure of the nucleus and
also topics related to atomic physics, nuclear astrophysics,
condensed-matter physics, and life sciences.
In 2007, the Mini-ball gamma spectrometer installed at
ISOLDE gave new insights into the shape of the nucleus and its
inner ‘shell’ structure. It studied the structure of heavy isotopes,
specifically the mercury isotopes 184Hg, 186Hg, and 188Hg.
Researchers have observed a coexistence of different nuclear
shapes (spherical and deformed) in such heavy isotopes, which
is not yet explained. At ISOLDE, a team of researchers studied
for the first time the electromagnetic interaction between a
beam of mercury isotopes and a tin target, using the technique
known as ‘Coulomb excitation’. Further developments of the
experiment are planned and will improve the understanding of
the shape coexistence phenomenon in the nuclear chart.
Preparing for the LHC
Given the unprecedented experimental conditions provided
by the LHC, the experiments are likely to show evidence of
new physics phenomena. Identifying how the new physics will
manifest itself is a whole new art of which CERN’s theorists
are true masters. A significant part of the team’s work goes into
defining the best strategies for identifying the highly unique

signs of unexpected behaviour that may appear from the
particle collisions. In this framework, the team has explored
phenomenological aspects of supersymmetric theories, with
particular emphasis on the reconstruction of the masses of
supersymmetric particles in high-energy collision experiments.
The team has also further investigated signatures of theories
with extra dimensions and addressed all major research areas
in string theory, including supergravity, black holes, and
mathematical physics.
Some of the most powerful tools theorists have to help in
understanding what happens at a fundamental level in collisions
at the LHC are the so-called Monte Carlo codes. These codes
contain computational algorithms that simulate the physical
systems and their interactions. The work of the collider physics
group in the Theory Unit in 2007 has led, among other findings,
to the introduction of new techniques for the numerical
calculation of complex particle interactions—using multi-loop
Feynman diagrams—and the release of new versions of two
Monte Carlo programs called Herwig++ and Alpgen.
Quantum chromodynamics (QCD) is the theory that describes
strong interactions and therefore the behaviour of the nuclear
building blocks—quarks and gluons. One of the hot topics
in QCD is the phenomenon of spontaneously broken ‘chiral
symmetry’, which appears in the mathematical description of
the vacuum. The properties of phenomena observed in nuclear
physics appear to be closely related to such spontaneous chiral
symmetry breaking, so many researchers have suggested a
variety of ideas on how to describe the effect. This year, thanks
to new computational techniques that resulted in a significantly
reduced computer time, theorists at CERN produced a
striking result confirming that chiral symmetry in QCD is
spontaneously broken in the way they expected. Work in this
area continues and is bound to produce very interesting results
in the near future.
